If you're wondering where to film a movie, Austin has a large variety of studios that cater to diverse creative needs. Whether you're a filmmaker seeking the perfect location or an enthusiast eager to learn filmmaking, Austin's film studios offer a range of opportunities.
1. Austin Studios
Operated by the Austin Film Society in partnership with the City of Austin, Austin Studios is a 20-acre film and creative media production complex centrally located at the former Robert Mueller Municipal Airport.
The facility features multiple sound stages, production offices, and on-site vendors, making it a bustling center for filmmakers. Tours are available for school groups or community organizations.
Movies that have been filmed here include Alita: Battle Angel (2019), Sin City (2005), Spy Kids series, Boyhood (2014), True Grit (2010), Grindhouse (2006), Secondhand Lions (2003), Predators (2010), Machete (2010), Miss Congeniality (2000), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot (2003), and more!

2. ATX Film Studios
Located just 10 minutes from downtown Austin and 5 minutes from the airport, ATX Film Studios is Texas' largest full-service film and entertainment studio complex.
The facility offers 6 stages, a 5-acre backlot, and modern amenities like office spaces and conference rooms to accommodate large-scale productions.
Movies and shows that have filmed here include My Generation (ABC Disney), Angels Sing (Lionsgate), Revolution (NBC/Warner Bros.), The Leftovers (HBO/Warner Bros.), Kevin Probably Saves the World (ABC), Fear the Walking Dead Seasons 4- 7 (AMC Studios), Spy Kids: Armageddon (Netflix), and 1923 Season 2 (Paramount/101 Studios.)

3. Troublemaker Studios
Founded by filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, Troublemaker Studios is renowned for its versatile spaces and in-house production services.
The studio offers a unique blend of facilities suitable for various events and productions such as two hangar stages with capacity for a large audience and a 100,000 sq. ft city backlot set.
4. Aduro Studios
Situated in North Austin, Aduro Studios and Film is a full-service production facility offering a range of services to filmmakers such as a cyc wall stage with vehicle access and a gated lot.
They have had clients such as MTV, Capital One, Yeti, Dell, Southwest Airlines, MLB, The Longhorn Network, and more! Tour their facility on their website with a 3D virtual tour.
5. Austin Public
Operated by the Austin Film Society, Austin Public is a 7,000 sq. ft. production facility near downtown, designed to support community media creators. Their studios feature LED lighting, post-production suites, and parking.
They also operates cable channels 10, 11, and 16 and have a program that gives producers access to training, equipment, facilities, and content distribution services.
6. Austin School of Film
With over 25 years of history, the Austin School of Film in South Austin offers educational programs and studio spaces to the community.
Tours are available for members who can be filmmakers, photographers, designers, or multimedia artists. Membership must be for at least 6 months at the current price of $165/month.

7. Spiderwood Studios
If you're willing to drive 40 minutes, Spiderwood Studios offers 3 sound stages, a 152 acre backlot with diverse topography, and RV hookup spaces. These studios also offer their space up for festivals, corporate meetings, and other small to large events.
Media filmed here include: Disturbed (1990), The Inner Circle (1991), Bad Kids Go To Hell (2012), It's In The Blood (2012), Doonby (2013), and a Steve Miller Band music video.
8. Hill Country Studios (In Development)
Last on our list is Hill Country Studios, a large new development set to open in late 2025. It will have a total of 21 sound stages, a 1500 acre backlot, and a 75 acre studio lot.
Located in San Marcos, it's right in the middle between Austin (50 minutes away) and San Antonio (1 hour away).
